May 2021 Trip - Day 3

May 26, 2021

Another beautiful day in Lake Charles kicked off with a cinnamon French toast “casserole” courtesy of Eloise.  This morning’s devotional was focused on service and how we can serve the Kingdom of God.  We are all gifted to serve in unique ways but ultimately we must all make the choice daily to serve. Angie Johnson stated it very simply “in the grocery store, you can choose to go on your way (selfishly, in a hurry) or choose to serve and help someone else. “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” - Galatians‬ ‭5:13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Our three groups were consolidated into two with one group finishing a home and able to start on another.

Jenell’s group began working in a new home today. While helping the homeowner pack and go through belongings we came across years of love letters, letters from grandchildren and photos that had been damaged by water. You could see the instant heartache in her eyes. Thankfully by drying them in the sun she was able to save some of these irreplaceable memories.

Kellie’s group worked again at Brent and Wen’s home.  We continue to be amazed at how peaceful these parents and homeowners are with two young children there at the house with all of us.  They’ve both been working alongside us and us with them for the past few days. Their home had been flooded four times in five years.

Homeowners hosted a block party this evening with help from Lake Charles Bible Church members, the Crisis Response group and many neighbors. Many of them had just met recently due to the flooding last week and this picture is of their belongings out in the street in front of the party.  There was a great turnout with around 50 people!  God has brought this community together and we are blessed to be able to serve them.
